Thirty-two participants from eleven countries: 4th Seminar for young researchers on “European Labour Law and Social Law”

On 12-15 May 2011, our Faculty hosted the 4th Seminar for young researchers on “European Labour Law and Social Law” organised by the Department of Labour Law and Social Security. The working language was English.

The idea of the seminar came from two professors, from Wolfhard Kohte from Germany, Professor at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, and from Teun Jaspers from the Netherlands, Professor at the University of Utrecht. From the beginning, they have been the co-organisers of the seminars and the network of young researchers. It is a tradition, that each year another university is requested to host the event. After Halle (Germany, 2008), Utrecht (the Netherlands, 2009) and Trento (Italy, 2010), the University of Szeged was chosen this year.

The organisation has double aims. On the one hand, it provides the opportunity to young researchers and career-starter academics to present their research findings, targets and methods in front of an audience consisting colleagues at the same age. They can ask questions, begin disputes and discuss the relevant issues of certain topics. On the other hand, it is a great opportunity for the young researchers to meet each other and spend some time together. The program of the seminars is designed to achieve these targets. In the formal program, the discussion has the priority, each short, 10-15 minutes long presentation is followed by a discussion. The professors, who act more as coordinators than active participants, constantly work on maintaining and motivating the sharing of ideas. Besides, the organisers ensure opportunities – mainly by organising social excursions and dinners – to support the networking among the participants. This year a trip to the National Heritage Park of Ópusztaszer was organised and thanks to the Szeged Wine Festival, we could show a little piece of Hungarian wine culture and gastronomy to our foreign guests.

To sum up, we can say that we had a really fruitful and cosy seminar and our colleagues left satisfied, with nice memories about our university and our city.
