The second session of the Regional Academy on the United Nations (RAUN) was organized on the 17-19 September 2014 at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Law. The conference focused on the topic of human rights.
The three-day program had as participants 30 students coming from Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia. The Faculty of Law of the University of Szeged was represented by 5 students and one of the chief organizers of RAUN, Dr. Anikó Szalai. The lectures offered up-to-date and broad-scaled information on the various aspects of human rights, such as the influence of corruption on the enjoyment of human rights, the right to adequate housing for the Roma in Serbia, the relation between diplomatic immunity and human rights or the current questions of an adequate refugee protection system.
Besides the lectures given by the representatives of the UN Specialized Agencies, students continued working on their research projects that has been in progress since the Prague Session of RAUN held in May 2014. After a project discussion each team presented the work implemented and the results achieved since that time and students also had the possibility to discuss the upcoming questions and problems related to their research.
In addition to the conference program, we visited the sights of Belgrade as well as took part in pleasant teambuilding programs in the evenings organized by the Serbian hosts.
In conclusion, participants could collect a huge amount of notions and practical pieces of information to be used for the further research. The next session of the Academy will be the closing one, where students will present their research projects in the UN Centre of Vienna.
